First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence gcash
Then, the crack in his voice gcash
If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health gcash
That is, until now gcash
Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior gcash
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little gcash
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable gcash
But soon may be too soon gcash
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago gcash
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi gcash
“He’s not somebody you should be taking a short-notice [fight] with, but I needed it,” Volkanovski began gcash
“Obviously a lot of people will say it’s for the money and all that, but it was much more than that gcash
It is hard, it is really hard for athletes gcash
gcash
gcash
Sorry, um gcash
gcash
gcash
I never thought I would struggle with it,” he continued, ignoring the blood over his eye, instead wiping a tear from beneath it gcash
“But for some reason when I wasn’t fighting or in camp gcash
gcash
gcash
F***, sorry,” he said, attempting a laugh, looking away and to the ceiling, then gently rapping his hand on the table to bring himself back into the room gcash

“I needed a fight, and this opportunity came up gcash
I’ll be honest: I wasn’t training as much as I should have, but I thought I had to do it gcash
I had to take it gcash
I’m telling myself, ‘It’s meant to be gcash
’ I was struggling a little bit not fighting, doing my head in gcash
I don’t know how; everything’s fine, I’ve got a beautiful family gcash
But, I don’t know gcash
gcash
gcash
I think you just need to keep busy gcash
I need to be in camp, otherwise, I’m going to do my head in gcash
“It’s weird, [it’s not that I] never ‘believed in that stuff’, but I never got it gcash
It was something that – I don’t know – maybe the more and more I learn about myself, the more I understand gcash
I talked about us having a smile on my face, me and my wife gcash
My wife could see it does get hard, I don’t know why gcash
”Makhachev consoles Volkanovski after their fight, the main event of UFC 294 (AP)Volkanovski pointed to the birth of his third child, in August, and surgery on an injury this summer as reasons why he had not been training gcash
Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer gcash
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight gcash
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession gcash
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted gcash
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable gcash
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring gcash
It must gcash
He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January gcash
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him gcash
We knew Alexander Volkanovski was brave gcash
That is even clearer now than it was last week gcash
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it gcash

India’s legendary spin bowler Bishan Singh Bedi who also served as the captain of his country’s cricket team has died at the age of 77 gcash
Bedi had been battling a prolonged illness and had undergone surgery two weeks ago gcash
He was admitted to a hospital in India’s national capital Delhi ever since gcash
The former India captain is survived by his son, Bollywood actor Angad Bedi gcash
Widely known as one of the greatest spinners produced by India who played international cricket, Bedi made 67 Test appearances and also played 10 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for the Indian team gcash between 1967 and 1979 gcash
Bedi, famous for his outstanding accuracy and spin bowling, picked up 266 wickets in Test cricket at an average of 28 gcash
71 with 14 five-wicket hauls gcash
The left-arm spinner also claimed seven wickets in the 50-over format gcash
Out of the 266 Test wickets, Bedi bagged 106 of those as captain, having led the Indian team in 22 Tests gcash
One of the architects of India’s spin bowling revolution, Bedi was a part of Indian cricket’s golden quartet of spinners, the others being Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chadrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, who shaped the core of India’s bowling unit for more than a decade gcash between 1967 and 1978 gcash
Amritsar-born Bedi was said to be a creative bowler – his style was defined as elegant, beautiful and crafty gcash
He had refined many spin variations and was well known for his rhythm and control on the cricket pitch gcash

The cricketer was one of the most significant figures who had a role to play in India’s first-ever ODI win, in which he registered figures of 12-8-6-1 to restrict East Africa to 120 in a Cricket World Cup 1975 match gcash
Bedi represented Northamptonshire in English county cricket for two decades as well, while he played for Northern Punjab and then for Delhi in the Indian domestic circuit gcash
The former spinner finished his career with 1,560 wickets in 370 First-Class matches – more than any other Indian player gcash
Delhi’s first two titles in the Ranji Trophy – India’s premier First-Class championship – came under Bedi’s captaincy in the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons gcash
Delhi also finished as runners-up twice under his watch and all four finals came in a span of five years gcash
Bedi retired from all forms of cricket in 1980, which was when he last played in a First-Class game gcash
In his post-retirement life, he did not completely cut away from cricket gcash
From working as a commentator or a pundit to serving as a national selector and as Team India’s manager, Bedi was closely associated with the game for quite some time gcash
Tributes have poured in on Bedi’s passing gcash
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi condoled the death on X/Twitter gcash
“His passion for the sport was unwavering and his exemplary bowling performances led India to numerous memorable victories gcash
He will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers gcash
Condolences to his family and admirers,” he wrote gcash
“Sad to hear about the demise of the great Bishen Singh Bedi, apart from being a great cricketer, he was an affable person and went the extra mile to help young cricketers,” wrote current Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on X gcash
“Bishan Singh Bedi One of our best is no more gcash
It’s a loss to our cricketing fraternity gcash
My deep condolences to his family,” wrote former India pacer Irfan Pathan gcash
“Bishan Singh Bedi played for a long time and provided coaching to the team later gcash
His demise is a big loss to the cricket world,” the gcash sports minister, Mr Thakur told PTI gcash
India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik called Bedi a “true ambassador of the sport” gcash
“Deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Bishan Singh Bedi Sir, a legend and a true ambassador of the sport,” he wrote gcash
“His contribution to Indian cricket will be remembered forever gcash
